Oxford’s boys’ basketball team took third place in the Carrollton Christmas Tournament last week as it won two of three games to run its record to 12-4 on the season. The Jackets have only 4 losses on the season and those losses came against teams that have a combined record of 47-3 and three of the losses were by two points or less.

The Jackets have played a rugged schedule and have played top teams from Mississippi and Georgia as well as Alabama powers. Coach VanMeter will have his players tested and ready for the playoffs at season’s end.

Oxford 64 Chapel Hill 44

The Jackets were in Carrollton, Ga., for three games in the Carrollton eight team Christmas Tournament to play some Georgia powers. The Jackets open with Chapel Hill and found themselves down 29-19 at half time. Poor shooting (5 of 23) plagued the Jackets.

They came out on fire in the second half and outscored Chapel Hill 45-15 to romp to a huge win. They hit 14 free throws down the stretch to help get the victory.

Justin Lawler had 20 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. Jamal Lee added 13 points and 7 rebounds. Urlic Jones had 10 points and 17 rebounds and Demetrius Maxwell had 7 points.

Greater Atlanta Christian 58 Oxford 40

The next Jacket opponent was the two-time defending Georgia State Champions and boasting a perfect 11-0 record coming in to the game. The number one ranked Trojans took advantage of another slow Yellow Jacket start and led 28-19 at the half.

There was no come back this time as the teams battled even in the third quarter as GAC led 41-32 entering the final quarter and made their free throws to get the win and move into the finals.

Keith Wilson had 14 points to pace the Yellow Jackets in scoring. Urlic Jones had 9 points and 10 rebounds and Lee had 8 points.

Oxford 74 Randolph-Clay 38

The Jackets took apart the powerhouse Red Devils 74-38. In almost identical halves the Jackets overpowered Randolph-Clay. They led 38-19 at halftime and won the second half 36-19.

Balanced scoring was the key as five Yellow Jackets were at or near to double figure scoring. Jones had 13 points, Wilson 12 points, Lee 9 points, Wright 9 points and Lawler 9 points. Jones had 13 rebounds and Lee 11 rebounds.
