Oxford Middle School’s principal was being treated Thursday at a Birmingham hospital after a wreck a week ago (Thursday, December 6) in Springville, according to hospital officials and police.

Kyle McCartney was in stable condition Friday, said Kevin Storr with media relations at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

McCartney’s sister, Kimberly Hummel, said by phone Thursday that her brother is recovering from numerous injuries, but is doing very well.

“Every day he’s improving,” Hummel said.

McCartney’s five-year-old daughter was riding in the vehicle with her father in the accident and was taken to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham for observations, but was released the next day with no serious injuries, Hummel said.

McCartney was traveling south on U.S. 11 in a Toyota Camry with his daughter when a northbound Ford Ranger collided with McCartney’s vehicle at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, said Springville police Chief Bill Lyle.

Officers are investigating the accident, Lyle said.

Both McCartney and the driver of the other vehicle were airlifted to UAB Hospital, Lyle said. Several attempts this week to learn the name and condition of the other driver were unsuccessful.

Hummel said the family has been overwhelmed with support from the Oxford school’s staff, students and administrators. Cards and well wishes from McCartney’s students have poured in since the accident, Hummel said.

“They have been so supportive. We thank them all so very much,” Hummel said.
