What happens when you up tempo the offense and keep the clamp down defense if you are the Oxford Yellow Jacket boys’ basketball team?

Well the Jacksonville Golden Eagles found out last week when they came to The Sports Arena and got totally dominated by the Yellow Jackets 67-36.

The Jackets hit the boards and then took off on the break and consistently beat the Golden Eagles down the floor for lay-ups. The Jacket full court press terrorized the Eagles into 19 turnovers and resulted in the Yellow Jackets having 14 more field goal attempts on the night.

Jacksonville jumped out quickly 5-0 with a field goal and a long three, but 6-6 Ulric Jones came into the game and rattled home two baskets and Oxford went ahead 8-7 at the 3:00 mark in the first quarter and never trailed again. A Keith Wilson three helped the Jackets pull out to a 15-11 lead as the quarter ended.

The Jackets went on a 10-0 run as Jones scored three points and Logan Craft drilled a three and Oxford was up 30-16. Wilson hit another bucket and Favion Sillman hit a three and the Jackets enjoyed a 35-21 halftime lead.

Justin Lawler nailed two threes to start the second half and the lead was 43-21. The Jackets poured in on as they held the Golden Eagles to only 5 second-half field goals. The lead was 55-27 after three quarters.

Clay Bishop had two field goals in the fourth quarter to lead the Jacket scoring as they rolled to 31 point win, 67-36.

Lawler had 19 points and 3 rebounds and Jones had 11 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Jackets. 11 Jackets scored in the game. Craft added 9 points, Deon Wright 5, Keith Wilson 9, Jamal Lee 2, Desmon Owens 2, Quinton Cotton 2, Clay Bishop 4, Demetrius Maxwell 1 and Sillman had 3.

The Jackets banged the boards hard. Jones had 7 rebounds, Owens 7 rebounds, Terry Mason 3 rebounds, Josh Montgomery 4 rebounds and Eason Lackey had 3 rebounds.

Oxford was 26 of 56 from the floor, almost 50 percent. Jacksonville was 13 of 42 from the floor, around 30 percent.

The 3-1 Jackets will be at Carrollton tonight, host North Forsyth, Ga., on Saturday and host Mountain Brook on Tuesday.

The JV improved their record to 2-1 with a 66-21 win over Jacksonville. Hammond led the way with 10 points. Kidd had 10, Cooke 9, Culver 8, Brimer 8, Bolander 6, Sipplin 4, Cooper 5 and McCord 4 points for the winning Jackets.

Oxford broke open a close game by outscoring the Golden Eagles 18-0 in the second quarter to open up a 34-9 halftime lead. The lead swelled to 53-19 after three quarters.
