Well the Jacksonville Golden Eagles found out last week when they came to The Sports Arena and got totally dominated by the Yellow Jackets 67-36.
The Jackets hit the boards and then took off on the break and consistently beat the Golden Eagles down the floor for lay-ups. The Jacket full court press terrorized the Eagles into 19 turnovers and resulted in the Yellow Jackets having 14 more field goal attempts on the night.
Jacksonville jumped out quickly 5-0 with a field goal and a long three, but 6-6 Ulric Jones came into the game and rattled home two baskets and Oxford went ahead 8-7 at the 3:00 mark in the first quarter and never trailed again. A Keith Wilson three helped the Jackets pull out to a 15-11 lead as the quarter ended.
The Jackets went on a 10-0 run as Jones scored three points and Logan Craft drilled a three and Oxford was up 30-16. Wilson hit another bucket and Favion Sillman hit a three and the Jackets enjoyed a 35-21 halftime lead.
Justin Lawler nailed two threes to start the second half and the lead was 43-21. The Jackets poured in on as they held the Golden Eagles to only 5 second-half field goals. The lead was 55-27 after three quarters.
Clay Bishop had two field goals in the fourth quarter to lead the Jacket scoring as they rolled to 31 point win, 67-36.
Lawler had 19 points and 3 rebounds and Jones had 11 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Jackets. 11 Jackets scored in the game. Craft added 9 points, Deon Wright 5, Keith Wilson 9, Jamal Lee 2, Desmon Owens 2, Quinton Cotton 2, Clay Bishop 4, Demetrius Maxwell 1 and Sillman had 3.
The Jackets banged the boards hard. Jones had 7 rebounds, Owens 7 rebounds, Terry Mason 3 rebounds, Josh Montgomery 4 rebounds and Eason Lackey had 3 rebounds.
Oxford was 26 of 56 from the floor, almost 50 percent. Jacksonville was 13 of 42 from the floor, around 30 percent.
The 3-1 Jackets will be at Carrollton tonight, host North Forsyth, Ga., on Saturday and host Mountain Brook on Tuesday.
The JV improved their record to 2-1 with a 66-21 win over Jacksonville. Hammond led the way with 10 points. Kidd had 10, Cooke 9, Culver 8, Brimer 8, Bolander 6, Sipplin 4, Cooper 5 and McCord 4 points for the winning Jackets.
Oxford broke open a close game by outscoring the Golden Eagles 18-0 in the second quarter to open up a 34-9 halftime lead. The lead swelled to 53-19 after three quarters.
