Pell City travels to Hoover this week, Huntsville will be hosting Vestavia Hills and Clay-Chalkville will be hosting Tuscaloosa County. Mountain Brook travels to Bob Jones in the other North Bracket game in the 6A playoffs.
Auburn (10-1) visits McGill-Toolen (11-0) in the biggest game in the 6A south bracket. Daphne will be at Opelika, Carver-Montgomery goes to Fairhope and Foley will be at Spain Park in other games. Sixteen teams are left going into tonight.
We went to Lincoln last week and watched the Golden Bears crush Sardis 49-34. Coach Ryan Burgess is doing a fantastic job for the Golden Bears. His team started out winning their first five Region games, but lost three straight to end the season due to injuries and personnel issues with some of his key players.
He did the right thing for the team and this past week re-tooled his offense to the Power I, moved his end to tailback and they rolled up and down the field against the Lions in getting the big win. They look like they have got their swagger back and could be a load to handle for any team they meet in the playoffs.
Our thoughts now start to turn to basketball as the Yellow Jacket basketball teams get going this week and the football season winds down. The boys have a ton of starters returning and face a very tough schedule that coach Joel Van Meter hopes will have the team ready to make a long run in the state playoffs this season.
Coach Tonya Peoples begins her second year with a host of juniors back on a team that was playing some great basketball down the stretch at the end of last season. They hope to carry that over to this year.
Over at Trinity Christian, Coach Jeff Smith always has his team ready to go and with the Tigers not having a football team this fall, I am sure they are chomping at the bits to get the basketball season going.
One last thought on Oxford’s 6-4 season in football. It is filled with memories of the leadership of Trent Simpson and him doing anything it took to help and lead the football team.
The development of Ty Webber at quarterback as the season went on and how he fought through injuries to come out and play. He got better and better as the season went on and he is going to give opponents fits the next two years.
Then there is Roc Thomas, who put together a stretch of seven games that might be the best such stretch in Oxford history, most of the time just playing a half and watching reserves the second half. Games three through nine were remarkable and he will be back to terrorize opponents next year.
There is also the cheerleaders, band and all those parents that help take care of all the many details and side events that make game night so much fun. It was always great to get to Lamar Field early and grab one of the burgers or hot dogs that are so delicious. The people are so nice, Oxford is blessed to have such great people.
